MAYVILLE- Thomas R. Gustafson Jr., 62, of Mayville, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at UPMC Chautauqua Hospital in Jamestown, NY, with family and friends at his side. He was born May 8, 1962, in Warren, PA, the son of Wanda Lee Gustafson and the late Thomas R Gustafson, Sr.
Tom was a 1980 graduate of Mayville Central School. He then worked as an Operating Engineer for IUOE Local 17 in Buffalo NY for 28 years before retiring in 2017.
He was a member of the Moose Club in Englewood, FL, the Lakeshore Social Club and the “Noon on Sunday Motorcycle Club”. He enjoyed golfing, boating, motorcycle riding, snowmobiling, traveling, using his tractor, taking care of his yard, and especially spending time with his family. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart. Traveling to the Florida Keys with Cheryl and other family and friends was hs favorite destination of all. Tom had a “bigger than life personality” and a love of people and life. He always had a story to tell and a smile to give. His two favorite sayings were “Its all good” and “Don’t go changin”. He will be remembered by many as”Gut” from his younger years and more recently as “Gutz”.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Stebbins Gustafson of Mayville, whom he married September 20, 1986, in Mayville, NY, his mother, Wanda Lee Gustafson of Mayville, two children, Trisha (Scott Olson) Delcamp of Mayville, Cody Gustafson of Mayville, and four grandchildren, Jillian and Callie Delcamp and Morgan and Kyle Olson. Tom also had a special place in his heart for his sisters-in-law and his brothers-in-law as he was an only child.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
The funeral will be held at noon on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville. The Rev. Daniel Prewitt will officiate. The family will receive friends for two hours before the service (10AM to Noon) at the funeral home. A reception will follow the funeral at the Mayville VFW.
