Jane Ann Gockley Young, 91, of Mayville, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at UPMC Chautauqua Hospital in Jamestown, NY, following a brief illness. She was born July 23, 1932, in Allentown, PA, the daughter of the late Clarence and Marguerite Bechtel Gockley.
Jane was a 1950 graduate of Whitehall High School and earned a BA in Education from Stroudsburg College in 1954. She married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Young, and began teaching third grade. She raised four children and went on to own an antique store. After retirement, Jane and Jerry sold everything and bought an RV. They traveled around the West for five years before buying a 100-acre farm and settling in Mayville, NY. Jane was one of the original members of the Olde English Babydoll sheep registry and raised sheep for the next 15 years. She was a member of the Chautauqua weaving guild and taught classes in spinning and weaving at the Chautauqua Institute.
Jane is survived by her daughter, Kristin (John) Savage of Mayville, NY, three sons, David (Dorothy) Young of Wayne, IL, Steve (Tracy) Young of Bend, OR, and Scott (Stephani) Young of Cincinnati, OH, nine grandchildren, Jason Savage, Russell Savage, Ashley Bennett, Tara Thornton, Jessi Cammarano, Mackenzie Nielsen, Ivy Young, Brooklyn Ludlow, and Owen Young, 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald M. Young and a brother, Gene Gockley.
Jane was sassy and sweet with a kind word for everyone she met. We will all miss her.
A memorial service will be held at a future date this summer at the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville and will be announced.
