Duane F. “Duey” Anderson, 90, of Lakewood, NY, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2024, peacefully in his home. He was born April 27, 1934, in Olean, NY, the son of the late Elmer E. and Minnie Mae Anderson.
He was a 1952 graduate of Olean High School and a 1956 graduate of St. Bonaventure University. Duane was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving as a 1st Lieutenant from 1956-1960, where he was parachute rated and a Fixed Wing Aviator. He was a pilot who flew the East German border and the Black Sea in Turkey for the 507th U.S. Army Security Agency – Europe.
After his military service, Anderson’s professional career started as an Assistant National Bank Examiner for the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency. He then embarked on his banking career at First National Bank, Jamestown, NY, as a mortgage officer and Branch Manager, and Jamestown Savings and Loan Association as Vice President and a mortgage officer. He worked for Northwest Savings Bank, Warren, PA, and M&T Bank, Buffalo, NY. He was President and Co-Owner of Southern Tier Memorial Cremation Corp from 1986-2010.
Anderson served on the Town of Ellicott Zoning Board of Appeals and was Town of Ellicott Supervisor in 1976 and 1977. After moving to Lakewood, Duane served as Village Trustee for many years. During his term as Village Trustee, he held roles as Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor. He later served on the Lakewood Zoning Board of Appeals.
He was involved in many organizations, including Christ First United Methodist Church, Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club, Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, Lakewood American Legion Post No. 1286, War Veterans Recreation, Falconer Rotary Club, Carroll Lodge 1147 F&AM, Robert H. Jackson Lodge of Research, Jamestown A.A.S.R. where he received the Meritorious Service Award in 2002, Dunkirk Commandery No. 40, Knights Templar, Western Sun Chapter No. 67 R.A.M., and Ismalia Shriners, Buffalo.
Duey enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He had a great sense of humor, loved classical and country music, always donated his time to various organizations, and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marian E. (Milks) Anderson, whom he married July 6, 1963, in Olean, NY. He is also survived by two daughters: Anita Anderson Cooper (David Hillerby), of Amherst, MA, and Andrea Rowan (John), of Lakewood; three grandchildren: Elizabeth Rowan of Orlando, FL, Evelyn Rowan of Houston, TX, and Patrik Cooper of Amherst, MA; and a niece, Sally Love, of Richmond, VA. Besides his parents, Duane was predeceased by his sister, Gloria E. Reeland.
As Duey always said, “It’s better to be seen than viewed.”
The funeral service will be held at 11:00am Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Christ First United Methodist Church, 663 Lakeview Ave, Jamestown, NY. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00pm Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at Lind Funeral Home. A Masonic Service will follow visitation Wednesday at 7:00pm at Lind’s.
