John A. “Jack” Ewer

John A. “Jack” Ewer died on August 23, 2024 at Hamot Hospital in Erie after suffering a stroke. He was born on December 1, 1931 in his family home on Mead Rd. in Busti, NY. His family moved to Sugar Grove when he was 7 years old.

He attended Lottsville School through 8th grade. He then attended Panama High School, riding his horse to catch the bus at the state line and then turning it loose to return home.

Jack worked for Lauger Farms while in high school. After High School he worked at Blackstone Corporation for 2 years before joining the Army, where he served at Fort Dix before serving in the Korean conflict for 2 years. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

Upon return home, he resumed work at Blackstone/Valeo where he retired after 46 years. He met Shirley Armstrong at a square dance in 1954 and they were married on September 28, 1956.

He was an extremely hard-working man and always picked up work when he was laid-off. His family had a small dairy farm and when he returned home from the service, he started raising Herford cattle, running the farm until he turned 80 years old.

Jack loved horses and was well known for his trick riding performances with his sister Beverly from his early teens to his mid-twenties. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed snowmobiling, square dancing, and visiting with family and friends.

Jack had a very good sense of humor and loved practical jokes. He was a founding member of the Sugar Grove AM Vets Post 50, a member of Harmony Post 1805 American Legion from 1954- 1965, and a member of the Lottsville United Methodist Church.

Jack and Shirley had a family of 5 children, Arthur Jay Ewer who was deceased 16 days after birth, Ann (Carl) Schultz, Sugar Grove, PA, Jackie (John) Schultz, Jamestown, NY, Terry (Lois) Ewer, Sugar Grove, PA, Brenda Ewer (Brad Azar), Key Largo, FL. They had 9 grandchildren, Amanda Zeiders, Tyrel Zeiders, Mark (Dawn) Schultz, Brad Schultz, Charlie Schultz, Andy Schultz, Melissa Schultz, Kate (Mitchell) Bosko, and Nicole Ewer. They have also been blessed with 4 great grandchildren Harper Schultz, Piper and Natalie Schultz, and Clay Bosko.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dwight and Beulah (Barton) Ewer, brother Basil Ewer, sisters Elsie Woodin, Beverly Johnson, Blanche Grimes and infant son Arthur.

The funeral service for Jack will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Lind Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4-6pm Wednesday, August 28, and for two hours prior to the service from 10-12pm Thursday, August 29, at Lind’s.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AM Vets Post 50 in Sugar Grove, PA, Lottsville United Methodist Church, or a charity of choice.
